Russell Payne

Russell Payne is an Attorney with Contreras & Metelska, P.A., representing clients in a broad range of immigration matters, including employment, asylum, and adjustment of status.

Russell is a graduate of the University of Minnesota Law School, with concentrations in Human Rights and International Law. Russell also holds a bachelor’s degree in Strategic Management from the Carlson School of Management.

During law school, Russell worked in the Detainee Rights clinic, helping clients in immigration detention resolve their immigration cases. Russell also served as a staff member and later as a Managing Editor for the Minnesota Journal of International Law. Russell was a Human Rights Center Fellow who worked with Fuerzas Unidas por Nuestras Desaparecidas en Mexico (FUUNDEM) in Coahuila, Mexico to help find disappeared people and spread international awareness on forced disappearance and impunity in Mexico. He also worked within Mexican juvenile prisons in Chihuahua to document and attempt to limit the use of pre-trial detention for youth accused of crimes.

 Russell developed a love of the outdoors growing up in Colorado, and during his free time he can often be found on the side of a mountain, or in a canoe in the Boundary Waters..
